In Media Relations it’s the Little Things That Make a Big Difference

Over the holidays, it's good to take time and remember that "media relations" is founded on relationships. Just as in our personal lives, it’s important to recognize and nurture these relationships. One of my favorite things to do during the holidays is to send a personal Happy Holidays email to those in media with whom I worked with over the course of the year. Most journalists’ inbox are overflowing with pitches from PR people so I believe it’s always nice for them to receive a personal message that simply focuses on wishing them well and sincerely recognizing your business relationship. These personal notes go a step beyond the mass email holiday cards and are a nice gesture that can easily be forgotten during the course of the year. Use the holiday season to glance back and reflect on those events that certain journalists have contributed to making a positive impact on your work. Extending your thanks and appreciation sets you apart from your colleagues and contributes to spreading some genuine holiday cheer.
